Prof. Dr. Margrit Seckelmann, M.A., who has been a professor of Public Law and the Law of the Digital Society at the Institute for Legal Informatics (IRI) of the Faculty of Law at Leibniz University Hannover since 2021, has declined an offer from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) and will continue to remain at the Faculty of Law in Hannover.
After successful negotiations, Professor Seckelmann will now hold a W3 Professorship and will occupy the newly established Chair for Public Law and the Law of the Digital Society. The new appointment was confirmed on 14 July 2026 by the presentation of the certificate by University President Prof. Dr. Volker Epping.
The Faculty of Law is very pleased that it has succeeded in retaining Professor Seckelmann in Hannover. "Successfully countering the offer is a great gain for our Faculty. Professor Margrit Seckelmann is an excellent, passionate, and influential scholar," explained Dean Prof. Dr. Susanne Beck. "With her outstanding research in artificial intelligence, administrative law, and constitutional law, she particularly strengthens the academic profile of our Faculty."
Professor Seckelmann’s research activities include, among others, the project "IProDaFo – Integrated Processes for Data Protection in Research," which aims to support researchers in their scientific projects regarding data protection law aspects. For this project, she recently secured funding of 264,264 euros.
Together with Prof. Dr. Tim W. Dornis, J.S.M., and Prof. Dr. Jan Eichelberger, LL.M. oec., Professor Seckelmann is editor of the keyword commentary "Artificial Intelligence," which was published in May 2026 by Nomos Verlag.
