How can the integration and implementation of data protection aspects in research projects succeed smoothly despite the complex legal requirements?

The "IProDaFo" project pursues two main approaches: On one hand, it seeks to improve the support provided to researchers themselves, and on the other hand, it aims for a stronger institutionalization of data protection tools and processes within research institutions. With success: In the 2025 call for projects by the Lower Saxony Research Data Management Initiative (FDM-NDS), the project, submitted on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Margrit Seckelmann and Dr. Friederike Knoke , was awarded funding. The grant amount is 264,264 euros.

Over two years, the Institute for Legal Informatics (IRI) will develop a process that intensifies the collaboration between researchers and legal departments in universities regarding data protection compliance and further develops the consultation procedures for planning and implementing data protection measures. Networking of the involved actors at universities in Lower Saxony also plays a central in the "IProDaFo" project.

It can build on the insights and results of the project "FODAHEMM – Research Freedom vs. Data Protection: How Can Barriers Be Removed?", which has already analyzed challenges and potentials in the tension field between scientific freedom, everyday research practices, and data protection law.

The faculty congratulates on this success!

About the Project Fund and the Funding Framework

The Project Fund of FDM-NDS supports particularly innovative FDM developments in Lower Saxony that enhance the quality of research data management in the state.

The Lower Saxony Research Data Management Initiative acknowledges the growing importance of research data in science and aims to sustainably support researchers in all disciplines in Lower Saxony in this promising area. As part of the initiative zukunft.niedersachsen and organizationally embedded in Hochschule.digital Niedersachsen, the program is funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture (MWK) and the Volkswagen Foundation.
