Who or what is ELSA?
ELSA stands for “European Law Students’ Association” and is the world’s largest association for law students. It was founded in 1981 with the goal of fostering dialogue among young Europeans and enabling intercultural exchange. Our chapter in Hannover is part of a network of 69,000 law students at more than 375 universities in 43 different countries. In Germany alone, over 12,000 law students are involved with ELSA.
What does the association do or offer?
As an initiative by students for students, ELSA offers both academic and practical activities alongside studies, including opportunities abroad. We organize visits to law firms, courts, authorities, and companies, giving you an insight into the working day of legal professionals. These visits give you the chance to make early contacts with potential employers and, for example, to secure an attractive and varied internship, which you need to register for the legal exam.
We also organize so-called Study Visits. During these, we visit a city in another European country, get to know national and international institutions, and explore a different legal system, as well as meet students from other ELSA groups. In addition, we offer the opportunity for paid internships abroad, with ELSA providing assistance in all formalities as well as with the search for accommodation and local support. In recent years, our Study Visits have taken us to, among others, The Hague, Stockholm, Madrid, Vilnius, Lisbon, and Vienna.
The social aspect is also important at events such as our regulars’ tables: With ELSA, you get to know people from all semesters. When you travel with us to the national meetings, which take place five times a year, you meet law students from all over Germany. Countless friendships have developed through ELSA, and even in later professional life, former involvement with ELSA forms a connecting element between many legal professionals.
Active involvement in ELSA allows you to gain experience early on in fields relevant to your career – project management, negotiation techniques, and teamwork are just a few examples.
Whether it’s participating in the largest civil law moot court in the German-speaking world, trips to the United Nations, English-language moot court competitions, or simply making contact with students from other universities in Germany or all over Europe – ELSA broadens your horizons beyond Hannover.
How can you join or get to know ELSA?
You can become a member for a semester fee of 10 euros (here is the registration form). If you would like to find out about our events or get involved, you can contact us at any time by email or via Instagram or talk to us in person on campus.
