International Humanitarian Law
International humanitarian law faces a variety of challenges today. The numerous ongoing conflicts once again reveal the fragility of the international legal order and can pose a serious threat to global stability. The current and repeatedly escalating crises are a significant test of the enforceability of legal norms in times of persistent conflict.
From September 2nd to 7th, 2024, the third joint Summer School on International Law, organized by the German Red Cross - Hanover Region (DRK) and the Institute for International Law at the Faculty of Law in Hanover, will take place. The event will be held under the academic direction of Professor Dr. Claas Friedrich Germelmann and Dr. Stefan Birkner.
The Summer School consists of lectures, interactive sessions with case studies, and small group work. The sessions will be conducted in English, and participants can earn 2 SWS credits. The Summer School will conclude with a symposium on September 7th, 2024.
Thematically, the Summer School will focus on the fundamentals of general and humanitarian international law, international criminal law, the relationship between human rights and humanitarian law, the law of information and its connection to humanitarian law, as well as the of modern technology in armed conflicts.
Renowned speakers from Germany and abroad are expected to participate.
Participation
The event is particularly aimed at students specializing in SP 5 – International and European Law, students of the Master's program in European Legal Practice, or students of Political Science who wish to earn ECTS credits for their studies through the Summer School. Additionally, participation can count towards fulfilling the foreign language requirement under § 4 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 lit. d) NJAG in conjunction with § 7 StudO.
A total of 45 places are available for participants. Registrations can be made by email to Vincent Widdig or via StudIP.
